i think that mitt romney should offer more specifics. mitt romney has many issues with taxes, but the president didn't raise taxes. it appears the other day and then yesterday, if you are expecting a big tax cut for me, don't. because i will close the loopholes. it would be like a pharmaceutical company leaving with a message from the side effects. i think you could go a step further and say what the president is saying to you is that 2% growth, 8% unemployment, real income is down and the trillion dollar deficit is up. i don't believe that. ashley: despite these gloomy numbers, the facts for themselves. why is it that the president made you believe the president, they are running campaigns out across the country. they are calling this the clinton bump. they believe that bill clinton standing up for barack obama, offering a testimonial on behalf of the president, it has made people feel better about this. ashley: always looking for the big one. you have to come up with your own line. some people are already writing him off the record i d

that's not mitt romney's view. i think it is difficult to sell his view to a majority of voters. >> we will see tomorrow how he explains that comment and his view for the rest of the country who do not make millions of dollars but certainly deserve a voice. thank you very much, roger. a pleasure having you on. the possible impact of the debates is part of the nbc news/"wall street journal" poll that debuts tonight on "nightly news." how important will the presidential debates be in helping you decide who to support for president? 38% said extremely, while the majority, 62%, said somewhat and not much. mark murray, is that in line with what we've seen when that question is posed before? >> it's an increase in the people that say it's important to them and their vote than we saw in 2004 and 2000. you could make the argument people are paying more attention to the debates than in the past. however, i would stress that 60%, 6 in 10 say this won't impact my vote that much. as we've seen in survey after survey, the numbe

the best attack ad on romney is mitt romney. to pick up on michael and michelle's point, what is romney going to come with in the campaign to have a good showing? he can't talk about taxes with tacks being the lowest they have been in 50 years. he can't talk about medicaid and medicare because their policies are unpopular. he can't talk about foreign policy, he doesn't have anything. the only thing he can argue is that obama has not been a good steward of the economy, but as we know, obama has a very good answer to that. and that's on offense. then you think about what he has to do on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example

the second best thing for mitt romney would be a major gaffe by president obama, so perhaps mitt romney could goad the president a little bit into some comments about small business other thans or something else. owners or something else. because the race is close enough that any change could have an impact. but, cheryl, historically debates have not moved the numbers all that much. four years ago when barack obama debated john mccain, mccain was down by five points when he went into his debate, and when he came out of the debate, he was down by six points. virtually no change. i think events on the ground, perceptions of the economy, economic news, perhaps things from the middle east still could have a bigger impact than these debates. cheryl: scott rasmussen, it's fascinating to see what your numbers are showing us, and they have been changing over the last several weeks. scott, thank you. >> thank you, cheryl. cheryl: well, still to come, everyone, ann coulter is going to be joining me with a look at her new book, "mugged." and coming up next, getting criticized from the inside. will
